Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-Mich.) on Friday publicly disclosed a major change in her personal life, telling constituents that her husband of 20 years, Jesse Holcomb, left the family home earlier this year and has filed for divorce. The announcement, made in a personal letter posted on X and subsequently reported by People Magazine, came without an explanation for Holcomb’s decision.
In her message to neighbors, Scholten described the experience as a “heartbreaking change” and said she has been relying on support from family and friends as well as her faith to raise her sons amid the upheaval. “With the help of incredible family and friends, and through my unshakable, foundational faith in God, I have been raising my boys with strength, love, and stability,” she wrote. “We have been overcoming every day.”
Scholten also sought to reassure constituents that her personal circumstances would not interfere with her responsibilities in Congress. In the letter she noted that, despite the “personal hardship,” she has continued to “show up” in her official capacity, saying she has passed legislation, brought federal dollars back to the district and served her constituents. “I raised my hand to do this job because I wanted more people who have never been heard to have a voice,” she added, describing how her experiences as “a woman, a mother, a social worker, and a public interest lawyer” inform her work.
The congresswoman emphasized that the experience has not diminished her commitment to representation. “Nothing in my current situation changes that. In fact, it deepens it,” she wrote.
Reporting from the Daily Mail identified Holcomb as a journalism professor at Calvin University; the outlet said he had not responded to Scholten’s letter at the time of its coverage. Other outlets, citing Scholten’s post and the People Magazine report, likewise noted that she did not provide further details about the circumstances that led to the separation and divorce filing.
Scholten’s announcement also comes amid a spate of high-profile personal changes among Michigan Democrats in recent years. The Daily Mail and other publications pointed out that Rep. Haley Stevens separated from her husband in 2022 after roughly a year of marriage, and that in 2023 former Rep. Elissa Slotkin divorced her husband the year before she was elected to the U.S. Senate.
Scholten’s disclosure underscores the balance elected officials sometimes must strike between private matters and public duties. While the announcement primarily addresses her family and personal coping mechanisms, it also serves to assure voters and colleagues that she intends to continue performing her legislative role. Scholten did not indicate whether she would seek further public discussion of the divorce or comment on any ongoing legal matters related to the filing.
Neither Scholten nor Holcomb provided additional public statements beyond the letter posted on X and the reporting that followed. The congresswoman’s office has not released further details about any changes to her schedule or official responsibilities as a result of the family matter. Constituents and political observers will likely continue to monitor developments, but for now Scholten’s message centers on resilience, faith and an expressed determination to maintain her work in Congress while caring for her children.
