Ken Paxton Declares Victory in Texas Senate Primary, Promises to Push Save America Act and Targets Democratic Opponent

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton addressed supporters Tuesday night after securing a decisive win over U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in the Republican primary for the Texas Senate seat. With 82.5% of the vote counted, Paxton led by nearly 30 percentage points, and Cornyn conceded a little more than an hour after polls closed across the state. The outcome sets up a November general election matchup between Paxton and Democratic state representative James Talarico.

Speaking at a victory event, Paxton cast the primary result as a mandate to pursue a conservative national agenda. He vowed to “support President Trump's America First agenda and finally secure our nation's elections by passing the Save America Act,” remarks that drew loud applause from the crowd. The Save America Act, a piece of election-related legislation favored by many election reform advocates in the GOP, was a centerpiece of Paxton’s commitments for the Senate.

Paxton also used the address to sharply criticize Talarico, whom he described as “the most extreme radical the Democrats have ever nominated.” In his remarks he mocked Talarico with a number of nicknames: "He's even running a vegan campaign, whatever that is. He goes by a few names that you may all have heard of. Some people know him as Tofu Talarico; some people call him Six-Gender Jimmy. I've even heard some people call him James Talafreako, and others refer to him simply as Low T Talarico," Paxton said. He argued that Talarico posed threats to public safety, border security and children’s wellbeing, citing Talarico’s support for more open immigration policies and comments attributed to him about the southern border: 'a welcome mat should be at our southern border.'

On social and cultural issues, Paxton criticized what he characterized as Talarico's positions on transgender issues in youth sports and medical care for minors, telling the crowd that Democrats’ policies would pose risks to children. He referenced comments reported by others that highlighted Talarico’s purported advocacy for trans youth and used those examples to underscore his broader argument that Talarico was out of step with Texas voters.

Beyond his attacks on his opponent, Paxton outlined several policy priorities he said he would pursue in the Senate. In addition to the Save America Act, he listed efforts to “make America healthy again,” protect children from “predatory transition surgeries,” bolster American strength on the world stage, and limit the influence of judges whom he accused of undermining the Constitution and American institutions. Throughout his speech, Paxton framed his campaign as a continuation of his work as Texas attorney general and as a bid to lower costs for families and protect conservative values.

A number of Republican lawmakers and conservative activists attended the victory celebration. Texas members of Congress present included Representatives Brandon Gill, Lance Gooden, Troy Nehls, Wesley Hunt and Ronnie Jackson. Activist Scott Presler was also in attendance. Their presence highlighted the level of Republican establishment and grassroots support Paxton attracted during the primary.

With the primary concluded, attention now turns to the November general election. Paxton’s victory over an incumbent senator in the Republican primary represents a notable shift within Texas GOP politics and signals that election integrity legislation and cultural issues will figure prominently in the general election campaign. Paxton’s pledge to carry the Save America Act to Washington indicates the type of national legislative battles he intends to pursue if elected to the U.S. Senate.
